We are dedicating this
page to the friends and families of those killed or injured during the cowardly
attack on an innocent American civilian population on 9/11/01; also to the
rescue workers and volunteers who have given so much of themselves to help
during this tragedy - some have given all.
If you want happiness for an hour -- take a nap.
If you want happiness for a day -- go fishing.
If you want happiness for a month -- get married.
If you want happiness for a year -- inherit a fortune.
If you want happiness for a lifetime -- help someone else.
From Suzie of Heart of Gold
A Cop on the take
First he takes ... the oath.
Now look at what else he takes:
He takes... it in stride when people call him pig.
He takes... his lousy pay check realizing he'll never be rich.
He takes... a second job sometimes to make ends meet and support his family.
He takes... time to stop and talk to children.
He takes... your verbal abuse while giving you a ticket you really deserved.
He takes... on creeps you would be afraid to even look at.
He takes... time away from his family to keep you safe.
He takes... your injured child to the hospital.
He takes... the graveyard shift without complaint because it's his turn.
He takes... his life into his hands daily.
He takes... you home when your car breaks down.
He takes... time to explain why both your headlights have to work.
He takes... the job no one else wants--telling you a loved one has died.
He takes ... criminals to jail.
He takes... in sights that would make you cry.
Sometimes he cries too, but he takes it anyway because someone has to.
He takes... memories to bed each night that you couldn't bear for even one day.
He takes... time to explain to his family why he can't make the ball game his child is in
and why he has to work on the holiday when other parents are off.
Sometimes, he takes a bullet.
And yes, occasionally he may take a free cup of coffee.
If he is lucky, he takes retirement.
Then one day he pays for all he has taken, and God takes him.

Iwo Jima, and flag at wreckage
~ Joe Rosenthal, and Thomas Franklin
of the Bergen Record ~
When I am called to duty God
where ever flames may rage
give me strength to save a life
what ever be its age.
Help me to embrace a little child
before it is too late
or save an older person
from the horror of that fate.
Enable me to be alert
to hear the weakest shout
and quickly and efficiently
to put the fire out.
I want to fill my calling
and to give the best in me
to guard my neighbor
and protect his property.
And if according to your will
I have to lose my life
bless with your protecting hand
my loving family from strife.

It was announced on TVFN that Michael Lomonaco lost a good number of his staff in the collapse.
I'm truly saddened by this. I'm a member of the NY fire service community ... a member of my own unit and 12 other friends and acquaintances are among those listed missing and dead.
I'm still a little numb to be dealing with much of this right now. It's just been a while since I checked in on the club...I
couldn't not say something. I operated there at the site on Saturday as a voluntary member...if you think it looks awful in print or on TV...you
ain't seen nothin 'til you've been there.
Nice to be here and see all of you folks. I missed the *party* at the WTC by 24 hours.
This is an account I posted to several of the clubs I belong to
...just so you have an idea of what it was like...As of my first day back to
work Friday, I found that, much to my surprise, that the three Fire Patrol Companies were allowed to operate at the scene of the WTC.
We have been there since Tuesday, from a period shortly before the impact of the second airplane. It is confirmed that friends or acquaintances from the fire service are dead or missing. Many of our members operating at the scene have been on voluntary duty. We have performed numerous tasks, such as working in *the pile*, digging, doing bucket brigade, removing debris, moving equipment and large
diameter water supply hose at the Command Post area.
As if being greeted by a block long row of demolished FDNY vehicles wasn't enough, there is a stack of breathing apparatus recovered from
*the pile* sitting at the Command Post. A short time after we arrived, a large wheeled hamper containing fire helmets recovered from the pile was rolled past us. Each of them represented a missing or deceased member.
The ability to be there and participate in even a minor way was most inspiring to keep going.
The support shown by the NYC communities toward us has been phenominal. Each firehouse
I've had contact with has been provided with enough food, desserts, flowers, and necessary supplies so that by the end of
this we'll all be fat diabetics with hay fever and a never ending supply of clean socks and underwear. I implore you all...keep doing exactly what
you're doing . . even the littlest bit of emotional support will serve to keep us going. Thank you all!
Fire Fighter's Prayer
When I am called to Duty, O God
Wherever flames may rage:
Give me strength to save some life
Whatever be its age.
Help me to embrace a Child
Before it is too late;
Or save an older person from
The horror of that fate.
Enable me to be alert
To hear the weakest shout;
And Quickly and effectually
To put the fire out.
I want to fill my calling Lord
To give the best I can
To guard my every neighbor
And protect his property.
And if according to your will
I have to lose my life;
Please bless with your Protecting Hand,
My children and my wife.
